Ingredients

Ingredients
  • 1 ½ lbs ground turkey (93% lean)
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil, divided
  • ¼ cup balsamic vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 4 burger buns
  • Optional toppings: lettuce, tomato, avocado

Method

Instructions
  1. Caramelize the onions. Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add sliced onions and cook slowly, stirring occasionally, for 20-25 minutes until golden brown and sweet.
  2. Create the balsamic glaze. In a small saucepan, combine balsamic vinegar and brown sugar. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5-7 minutes until slightly thickened. Remove from heat and stir in Worcestershire sauce.
  3. Prepare the turkey patties. In a large bowl, combine ground turkey, minced garlic, dried thyme, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Gently mix without overworking the meat. Form into 4 equal patties, about ¾ inch thick.
  4. Cook the burgers. Heat remaining olive oil in a grill pan or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook burgers for 5-6 minutes per side, or until internal temperature reaches 165°F.
  5. Assemble the burgers. Spread balsamic glaze on the bottom bun, place the turkey patty, top with generous amount of caramelized onions, and add your favorite toppings. Serve immediately.

Notes

For juiciest turkey burgers, avoid overmixing the meat. Caramelized onions can be made ahead and stored for 3 days. Don't press down on burgers while cooking. Balsamic glaze thickens as it cools - make right before serving.
